Parks Beyond the Beach: Exploring Walton County’s Hidden Gems

While South Walton is renowned for its sugar-white beaches, there’s even more natural beauty to explore inland. From coastal dune lakes to nature trails, we’re highlighting the best parks in Walton County.

Located just east of DeFuniak Springs, Morrison Springs is a diver's paradise with crystal-clear waters for unbeatable visibility. Even without S.C.U.B.A. certification, you can enjoy a dip in the cool water, take advantage of the boat ramp or bask in the sun on the diving dock. Spread out for a leisurely picnic in the shade or fire up the grills for delicious outdoor dining. With clean restrooms on the park premises, nature has never felt more convenient.

A true Freeport gem, Grady Brown Park offers stunning natural views and an array of amenities. Enjoy lunch at the designated picnic areas with convenient access to a boat ramp, fishing opportunities, grills and clean restrooms. You can also rent a canoe for a day of aquatic adventure. And with ADA-accessible accommodations, this park is a memorable outdoor experience for everyone.

For a peaceful escape, take a day trip to Lakewood Park. Located in Paxton, you’ll find picturesque walking trails where you can savor the beauty of nature at your own pace. Climb to Britton Hill, the highest geographical point in all of Florida, at a modest 345 feet above sea level. Soak up serenity in this tranquil park with clean restrooms and picture-perfect views galore.

Ready to see more of what Paxton has to offer? Make a pit stop at Ghentsville Park for a day of fun in the sun. Challenge your friends to a basketball game on the courts, enjoy a picnic at the open tables and grills, and let the kids frolic on the playground. With easy parking, shaded pavilions for gatherings, and clean restrooms, it’s easy to relax in Ghentsville Park.

Take a dip in a coastal dune lake at Deer Lake State Park for premium outdoor recreation in South Walton. With Southern magnolias, golden asters, and other native plants dotting the landscape, you can picnic among the local foliage and keep your eye out for migratory birds and butterflies! Afterward, go fishing on the boardwalk and get up close and personal with the rare dune ecosystem.

For an adventure-packed day of fun for the whole family, visit Wee Care Park in DeFuniak Springs. Get active on the baseball/softball field or challenge your friends to a quick game of basketball, soccer, or tennis – Wee Care has a court or field for everything! And if you’re in a more leisurely mood, enjoy a picnic, let the kids play on the playground equipment, or cool off on the splash pad. With clean restrooms, walking paths, and beautiful scenery, this park provides a refreshing escape.

Nestled in DeFuniak Springs, Mossy Head Park is a tranquil retreat for nature lovers. Whether you’re looking for a scenic picnic spot or a sunset barbecue, Mossy Head Park’s pavilions, grills, and tables make outdoor dining a delight. Playground equipment keeps the little ones entertained, while the splash pad offers a refreshing respite from the heat. Take a leisurely walk along the designated trail and clean restrooms make for a quick clean-up.

Discover the beauty of Choctaw Beach Park, a hidden gem for water sports enthusiasts. Row across the water in your boat or canoe to explore the cove. Enjoy a picnic under the shaded pavilions while the kids have a blast on the playground and the Choctaw splash pad. With clean restrooms close at hand, all you have to worry about is kicking back.

Indulge in a paddling adventure on the Choctawhatchee River Paddle Trail at Cowford Landing. With ADA-accessible amenities and boat/canoe access, this park welcomes all visitors. Enjoy convenient parking and a leisurely outdoor meal at the pavilions and picnic areas, complete with clean restrooms to ensure you’re always comfortable at this riverside oasis.

Ready to immerse yourself in nature's playground? Gaskin Park is a perfect destination for relaxing in the sun. Take advantage of the grills and picnic area for a delicious barbecue while the kids swing on the playground, stretch your legs on the walking trail, and enjoy clean onsite restrooms.

In Walton County, beaches are just the beginning. Whether you’re looking for a serene nature retreat, recreational opportunities, or a fun-filled day for the whole family, go beyond the beach and visit our parks – you won’t regret it!
