Parks Beyond the Beach: Exploring Walton County’s Hidden Gems

Ready to escape the bustling beach crowds and explore Walton County’s hidden gems? From Morrison Springs to Grady Brown Park, these parks located north of the Choctawhatchee Bay offer an unforgettable outdoor experience. Whether you want to picnic by the water or take the boat out for an afternoon of fishing, these natural hotspots provide a range of amenities for an unforgettable outdoor experience. It's time to swap your flip-flops for tennis shoes and explore the world beyond the sand!

Located just east of DeFuniak Springs, Morrison Springs is a diver's paradise with crystal-clear waters and unbeatable visibility. But even without a S.C.U.B.A. certification, you can take a dip in the cool water, take advantage of the boat ramp or bask in the sun on the diving dock. Enjoy a leisurely picnic in the shaded areas or fire up the grills for a delicious outdoor meal. And with clean restrooms on the park premises, nature has never felt more convenient.

After a grand reopening this spring, Grady Brown Park is open for exploration! A true Freeport gem, this park offers stunning natural views and an array of amenities. Enjoy a bayside lunch in the designated picnic areas with convenient access to a boat ramp, fishing opportunities, grills and clean restrooms. You can also rent a canoe for a day of aquatic adventure. And with ADA-accessible accommodations, this park offers a memorable outdoor experience for everyone.

For a peaceful escape, take a day trip to Lakewood Park. Located in Paxton, enjoy a leisurely stroll along the picturesque walking trails and savor the beauty of nature. Climb to Britton Hill – the highest point of geographical elevation in all of Florida (at a modest 345 feet above sea level). Find solace and serenity in this tranquil park, with clean restrooms and picture-perfect views galore.

Ready to see more of what Paxton has to offer? Make a pit stop at Ghentsville Park for a day of fun in the sun. Challenge your friends to a basketball game on the courts, enjoy a picnic lunch at the open tables and grills, and let the little ones frolic on the playground. With easy parking, shaded pavilions for gatherings and clean restrooms, it’s easy to relax in Ghentsville Park.

For an adventure-packed day of fun for the whole family, visit Wee Care Park in DeFuniak Springs. Get active on the baseball/softball field or challenge your friends to a quick basketball, soccer or tennis game – Wee Care has a court or field for everything! And if you’re more in the mood for leisure, enjoy a picnic, watch the kids play on the playground equipment or cool off on the splash pad. With clean restrooms, walking paths and picturesque views galore, this park provides a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle.

Nestled in DeFuniak Springs, Mossy Head Park is a tranquil retreat for nature lovers. Whether you’re in the mood for a scenic picnic or a sunset barbecue, the park’s pavilions, grills and tables make outdoor dining a delight. Playground equipment keeps the little ones entertained, while the splash pad offers a refreshing respite from the heat. Take a leisurely walk along the designated trail and make use of the clean restrooms – the burgers will be ready soon!

Discover the beauty of Choctaw Beach Park, a hidden gem for water sports enthusiasts. Paddle across the water in your boat or canoe and explore the cove. Enjoy a picnic under the shaded pavilions while the kids have a blast on the playground and splash pad. And with clean restrooms close at hand, all you have to worry about is kicking back.

Indulge in a paddling adventure on the Choctawhatchee River Paddle Trail at Cowford Landing. With ADA-accessible amenities and boat/canoe access, this park welcomes all visitors. Enjoy convenient parking and a leisurely outdoor meal at the pavilions and picnic areas. And with clean restrooms, you’ll always be comfortable visiting this riverside oasis.

Ready to immerse yourself in nature's playground? Gaskin Park is the perfect destination for a relaxing day in the sun. Take advantage of the grills and picnic area for a delicious barbecue while the kids swing on the playground. Afterward, stretch your legs on the walking trail and use the always-clean onsite restrooms.

In Walton County, beaches are just the beginning. Whether you’re looking for a serene nature retreat, recreational opportunities or a fun-filled day for the whole family, go beyond the beach and visit our parks – you won’t regret it!
