Planning Your Sunset Beach Picnic
A picnic at the beach is a great way to get some bonding time – whether it’s a romantic date or a full-family hangout. And what better place to spread your blanket than our sugar-white sand with a sunset view over the beautiful turquoise Gulf water?
To get your planning started, here’s a quick cheat sheet of some items to remember when prepping:
- Large blanket
- Trays or cutting board for food prep and presentation
- Cooler with plenty of ice
- Cups or tumblers with lids (no glass)
- Serving utensils
- Resealable food containers
Want to add a special toast to the occasion? Bring along some lively libations from one of the area’s wine and spirits stores, such as Shunk Gulley or Cork & Barrel. Just remember to bring plastic cups since glass is prohibited on the beach! The South Walton Visitor Center offers a fun wine kit featuring two plastic wine glasses, a wine opener and a wine tumbler in a small South Walton tote.
When you’re looking for something to pair with your vino, assemble your own charcuterie board by grabbing a selection of your favorite cheeses, meats, artisanal crackers and other snacks. You can swing by a local grocery store or visit a few specialty markets around the area. Over in Inlet Beach, 30A Olive Oil Co. has an amazing selection of gourmet foods, charcuterie, jams and honeys. Chan’s Wine World in WaterColor has a great cheese shop where you can pick up some familiar favorites and try out some new finds. And for additional gourmet cheeses and sides, plus a nice assortment of craft beers, check out Destin Ice Market 30A.
Take all the guesswork out of the equation by getting in touch with CC. Boone, Blue Magnolia Catering Co. or Fresco Picnic Co. – local companies who offer delivery of “grazing boards” that are beautiful works of art! Want to dial it up a notch? They even provide delivery, set-up and take-down of full-scale picnics. All you have to do is show up and enjoy!
Ready for the main course? Countless local restaurants can help take your picnic to the next level with shareable dishes that you can carry out and bring right to the beach. For example, Chiringo has fresh-made options including lobster rolls, fish tacos and snapper dip with homemade chips.
The only other decision you have to make is when to come. While our beaches are beautiful year-round, keep in mind that some of the most spectacular South Walton sunsets occur in the fall. So, pick your spot, collect your supplies and spread out your blanket for an unforgettable evening. Just remember to leave no trace when you’re done!
